Sandy Hook 5k to be held in Newtown on March 29, 2014
March 29, 2014 @ 8:15 am
January 11, 2014 – The Sandy Hook 5K Run/ Fitness Walk that was held this past March to honor the memories of the victims and to support those affected by the tragic events that occurred in Newtown/Sandy Hook last December. Approximately 15,000 runners and walkers took to the streets of Hartford and virtually in their own areas to show support for Newtown, raising over $438,000 for the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.
On March 29, 2014, the Sandy Hook 5k will be held, this time in the town the event works to benefit. The on-site event will be held starting at 8:15 am on the campus of Fairfield Hills and will feature a 5K run/ fitness walk, as well as a fun run for children ages 2-11. Runners and walkers of all abilities and families with strollers are welcome.
Registration fees from the event and fundraising will be donated to the Newtown Memorial Fund.
The event in Newtown will allow for a limited number of runners to participate at the on-site event, however, for those who are unable to participate in Newtown but would like to be a part of this event; it will once again feature a “Virtual Runner” option. This option will allow an unlimited number of individuals to register and run in their local areas on March 29 in honor of those in Newtown. Participants registered through the virtual option will receive a t-shirt, racer’s bib and a finisher’s certificate.
“The response to last year’s event was so overwhelming. We wanted to make sure the meaning behind this event continued on so that the running community could continue to show its support for Newtown,” said Katie Blake who is returning to organize the 2014 event. The 2014 event will also be organized by a committee of all volunteers.
The event website at www.5krunforshf.org will have the latest regarding registration and race day information once available.
Registration announcement made on January 09, 2014
The 2nd Annual Sandy Hook 5K will take place in Newtown, CT on March 29, 2014. This year will be much different than last year, as the new location limits us to no more than 1,000 runners. We understand that many more than this ran in last year’s 5K, so to make things as fair as possible, these spots will be awarded on a lottery basis, with some priority to Newtown and Sandy Hook residents, as well as town officials, first responders, educators and clergy members.
The link for lottery registration will be open and made available on the official race website – 5krunforshf.org, and on the YMCA Racing Collaborative facebook page on Sunday January 19 at 8:00am. Lottery registration will close on Saturday February 1 at 11:59pm. There is no charge to enter the lottery. Lottery status notifications will be emailed out on Monday, February 3. If you are selected to receive a lottery spot, you will have one week to register (This year’s fee is $26), and if you choose not to do so within that time frame, the spot will automatically be offered to the next person on the waiting list, who will be notified via email.
Registration for the Virtual Run will open on January 19 as well. You are welcome to register for both the Virtual Run and the 5K Lottery. Please note that if you do this, and you are selected for a 5K lottery spot, you will NOT get a refund for the Virtual Run, but can consider it a donation. We will publish more information about the Virtual Run next week, if this is something you would like to be involved in. Virtual Run registration will not close until much later, so you can also wait until after you are notified of your lottery status before registering the Virtual Run. We will publish a list of Frequently Asked Questions regarding the Virtual Run next week to help you decide if it is something you want to get more involved in, in your own neighborhood.
We also have a half-mile kid’s run, with 250 spots available, on a first-come,
If you have questions regarding registration, you may email Kristin from the YMCA Racing Collaborative at *protected email*. Please remember that the Sandy Hook 5k is not about running. It is about life: honoring the memory of precious lives lost through tragedy and celebrating the gift of life. It is about uniting in hope for the future. This year’s theme is “Love Runs Through.” Love runs through everything being done to prepare for this event, and through every step we take to reach our goals. Our goal here is to bring you a world-class, one-of-a-kind family event filled with love. Whether you are running with us in Newtown, volunteering, fundraising, or running with us virtually…love runs through.
